How to Choose the Right Size Rug for Your Space

Selecting the perfect rug can transform a room, adding warmth, texture, and style. However, one of the most crucial aspects of picking a rug is choosing the right size. Here’s a quick guide to help you find the ideal fit for your space.

1. Consider the Room’s Function

Living Room: For a living room, the rug should anchor the seating area. Ideally, it should be large enough so that all the front legs of your furniture rest on it. A common mistake is choosing a rug that’s too small; it should be big enough to unify the seating arrangement.

Dining Room: In a dining room, the rug should be large enough to accommodate the table and chairs. As a rule of thumb, the rug should extend at least 24 inches beyond the table on all sides, allowing chairs to remain on the rug even when pulled out.

Bedroom: For a bedroom, you can either place a large rug under the bed, extending beyond the sides, or use smaller rugs on either side of the bed. If you opt for a large rug, it should extend at least 18-24 inches around the bed.

2. Measure Your Space

Measure the area you want the rug to cover, not the entire room. This will help you visualize how much floor space the rug will take up and ensure it complements rather than overwhelms the space.

3. Leave Space Around the Rug

Aim to leave 12-18 inches of bare floor between the edges of the rug and the walls. This frame of visible flooring creates balance and keeps the room from feeling cramped.

4. Shape and Placement

The shape of your rug should complement the shape of your room and furniture. Round rugs work well in smaller spaces or under round tables, while rectangular rugs are versatile for most areas.

5. Test with Painter’s Tape

If you’re unsure about the size, use painter’s tape to outline where the rug will go. This allows you to see the dimensions in your space without committing to a purchase.

6. Think About Proportions

Consider the scale of your furniture and the room itself. A rug that’s too small can make the room feel disjointed, while one that’s too large can dominate the space.

By keeping these tips in mind, you’ll be able to choose a rug that not only fits your room perfectly but also enhances the overall aesthetic. A well-sized rug can pull a room together, making it feel more cohesive, comfortable, and stylish.
